THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the district administration to terminate the ongoing activities at all quarries that operated illegally.

Issuing the order in the wake of the recent quarry accident, near Marayamuttom, that claimed two lives, Commission acting-chairman P Mohandas also directed the authorities to provide adequate solatium to the families of those who were killed and also to adopt steps to shoulder the expenses of those being treated. He instructed the District Collector and the Director of the Mining and Geology Department to file their action taken reports within January 3.

In his complaint, social activist P.K. Raju alleged that around 90 quarries functioned in the district without the requisite permits. Such quarries were being operated with the backing of officials, he said.

He also accused the Mining and Geology department of turning a blind eye towards such blatant violations. The activist also called for booking the owner of the quarry near Marayamuttom under legal provisions that pertained to murder.
