THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An anti-corruption court here invalidated the petition that Chief Secretary K M Abraham had amassed a fortune far beyond his known sources of income.

Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge, VACB, D Ajith Kumar upheld the agency’s submission that its investigations had turned up no evidence to suggest that Abraham had amassed ill-gotten wealth.

C C Augustine, Additional Legal Adviser, VACB, told the court that Abraham had bought his flat in Mumbai from the proceeds of his legitimate income as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India.

The Income Tax Department had cleared the purchase in 2008. The bureaucrat had raised a housing loan for his flat in Thiruvananthapuram.

The allegation that Abraham had constructed a three-storey apartment at Kadapakkada in Kollam using illegally acquired wealth was a condemnable lie.

Abraham co-owned the inherited plot with his two brothers, both highly paid doctors employed abroad. His siblings had transferred the money to construct the apartment to their mother’s account. They also gave Abraham the power of attorney to use the money after the three entered into a legal agreement.

The court rejected de-facto complainant Joemon Puthenpurackal’s contention that the Vigilance had arbitrarily selected 2000-09 as the check period to help  Abraham.
