KOCHI: A child and her grandmother drowned in Panaarthodu canal at Mulanthuruthy Thursday afternoon. The dead were identified as Ammini, 56, of Perumbilly and Diya Salim, 5, daughter of Salim. Ammini was washing clothes when Diya accidentally fell into the canal. On seeing the child fall, Ammini jumped into the water in a bid to save her. After a passer-by raised an alarm, locals rushed to the spot and brought the two out of water. Though they were taken to hospital, their lives could not be saved. Diya’s mother was resting after delivering her second child a month ago. The Mulanthuruthy police have registered a case.
