THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Restoration work of the Padmatheertham pond will be resumed within two days under the additional supervision of an archaeology expert. The work had come to a halt recently after a controversy over the dismantling of two ‘Kalmandapams’ (stone structure).

A meeting of the conservation committee, temple administration committee, members of the ruling family of erstwhile Travancore and others was held to sort out the issues. It was decided to appoint S Hemachandran, former Director of the Archaeology Department, as additional supervisor to ensure that the Kalmandapams and the entire structure were restored to the original form.

The Nirmithi Kendra has taken up the restoration work.

There are eight such ‘Kalmandapams’ at Padmatheertham. Some of them, especially on the northern side, are in a pretty precarious position now, with weak basements. The same stones will be used for the restoration and the stones are numbered before dismantling.

The foundations of the ‘thanthrimadom’ near the West entrance of the temple are in a dilapidated state. The work is expected to be completed within four months.
