KOTTAYAM: A 20-year-old youth drowned on the Kodoor River, near Kollad, in the outskirts of the town on Wednesday. The police identified the dead as Tony Thomas of Puthenpurackel House, Thellakom, Ettumanur.

The youth arrived at the spot with three of his friends by 11.30 am.

Three of them ventured into the river and started swimming to the other bank.

While one of them successfully completed the task, the rest could not.

One among the two was rescued by a local person, an ex-serviceman. However, Tony drowned by the time other rescue workers arrived.

His body was taken out after more than half an hour of search in the river. His funeral will be held at 4.30 p.m. on Thursday at the St. Joseph Church Cemetery, Pushpagiri.
