ALAPPUZHA: A 24-year-old youth was killed and four others were injured when two motorcycles collided at Kanjikuzhy, near Mararikulam, allegedly after one of the motorcycles was chased by the police. The dead was identified as Vichu, 24, of Veliyil, Pathirapally. The injured Shebu, 40, of Kanjikuzhy, his wife Sumi, 35, two children Harsha, 10, and Sreelekshmi, 2, were admitted to Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam.

Vichu was returning home after attending a temple festival at Pathirapally. Shebu and his family were going home after a visit to the Kanichukulangara temple. Shebu said his motorcycle collided with the other motorbike after the highway police blocked his way. Prior to the accident, Shebu had defied a police directive to stop. He was chased by the police which resulted in the collision.

The police refuted the allegations and said that the victims were taken to hospital by the highway police.
