IDUKKI: The District and Session Court, Thodupuzha, sentenced Karakkattu Sobin, 24, to 14-year rigorous imprisonment in a case related to a rape attempt on a 65-year-old woman. He was awarded a fine of Rs. 75,000 too. The prosecution case was that when the woman, who was living alone, was bathing near the well of her house, the accused overpowered her, took her to a room, and attempted to rape her. However, on hearing her cries, neighbours rushed in and the accused fled from there. The woman and the witnesses identified the accused in court. The sentence was given under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including attempt to rape, intrusion into the house, and attack on a person. The case was registered at the Upputhara police satiation on July 9, 2015, and Sobin was arrested by the then Kattappana Deputy Superintendent of Police P K Jagadeesh. The court said that if the accused failed to remit the fine, he would be imprisoned for nine more moths.
