THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Police have started inquiry into the unexpected accidental death of Thamarakkulam Manaladi Thekkethil Gopinatha Pillai (78), the father of Pranesh Kumar, who had been killed in a fake encounter in Gujarat.

The case is being investigated by a special team under Alappuzha district police chief. The team has examined the accident spot with the help of forensic department.

Gopinatha Pillai died the other day at an Ernakulam private hospital after getting injured in the accident at Cherthala Vayalar. He met with the accident while he was going to hospital for health check-up.

His brother Madhavan Pillai was driving the car. They left home from his Thamarakulam house at 4:30 in the morning. At Vayalar, the car moving in front of them suddenly applied break and a lorry behind them rammed their car as it slowed down.

The car then lost control and run into the median. At that time another lorry that came from Alappuzha side also hit the car.
However, what made things mysterious was that the lorry that was behind their car didn’t stop after hitting the car but it sped away.

Police have taken the tanker lorry and its driver Chalakkudy native Siju into custody. Two mini lorries were also taken into custody.
