JAIPUR: Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani was stopped at Jaipur airport on Sunday, two days after writing an open letter to the Prime Minister questioning his silence on caste and communal atrocities and the recent gang rapes.

Mevani, who was to address a rally in Nagaur, tweeted that he meant only to talk about the Constitution. He added the Rajasthan police had barred him even from moving around Jaipur and "are forcing me to fly back to Ahmedabad."

But the police said they had stopped Mevani only to inform him about the Nagaur administration's restrictions on his visit and about the bar on assemblies in Jaipur, imposed after violence during the April 2 Bharat Bandh.

Mevani is "free to travel anywhere", they added without elaboration, and "was neither detained nor arrested."
