KOCHI: The Supreme Court has granted permission to Babu Sebastian to continue as the vice chancellor of the MG University until May 4, 2018, based on a petition submitted by him seeking the same.

The court had earlier given him the permission to continue as the VC until today (April 16) but the SC reconsidered the case today, and said that it would hear the final argument on the case on May 4.

Babu Sebastian had appealed at the SC saying that the HC made mistake in examining the UGC guidelines of 2010.

According to the 2010 UGC guidelines, the main criterion to qualify for the post of VC is to have served as a professor in some university or academic research institution. The HC has said that Babu Sebastian did not meet this criterion.

Nevertheless, Babu Sebastian, in his appeal, has pointed out that he became the director of the State Institute of Education Technology after serving as lecturer in a college for 19 years, and another seven years as associate professor in a university. Besides this, he has served as a university research guide for 18 years, and has also served in various other capacity including chairman of PhD award committee. He has pointed out that the selection committee for the appointment of VC suggested his name after considering his services in all sections of the education department.

He has served as the director of the State Institute of Education Technology for more than 10 years. He has pointed out that the HC had found out that this is not equal to the post of professor only by examining the qualifications of the ones who had served as VC prior to him. Sebastian has said that this was a huge lapse on the side of the HC.

“Also, the HC rejected the finding by the expert committee that he is a well-known scholar. The selection committee’s discrimination in choosing a VC has not been questioned before, and therefore the suggestions and decisions by it cannot be rejected. The HC order came on an appeal that was filed three after the appointment. There’s only a few more months for me to complete my term,” he has said in his appeal.

The HC disqualified Babu Sebastian based on a petition submitted by T R Premkumar, a native of Kurumassery of Ernakulam, alleging that there’s lapse in the appointment of VC.
