Thiruvananthapuram: Miscreants and goons came out on streets to force shops to down shutters, motorists to stop their vehicles and hurled stones at police on Monday during a fake hartal called through social meida to protest against Kathua killing.

In Kasaragode, services of the KSRTC were affected. Widely shared messages that surfaced on Facebook and WhatsApp on Sunday evening said a hartal will be observed on Monday to express outrage over the recent gangrape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir.

In districts like Kasaragode, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Palakkad, supporters of the hartal hampered traffic at several places and forcefully shut down shops. Stones were hurled at the marketplaces of Kottakkakam and Chalai in Thiruvananthapuram, and shop owners were threatened to down their shutters.

Prohibitory order was declared at Thirur, Thanur and Parappanangadi police station limits.

A KSRTC bus driver was injured after the bus was stoned near Vidyanagar in Kasaragod. KSRTC buses halted service in various parts in northern districts. Shops also remained closed. Police lathi-charged protesters in Kannur. 15 protesters were detained by police after which hartal supporters entered the Kannur Town police station, when the police resorted to lathi-charge.

Actor Parvathy, in an Instagram live, said:

“Protests have been taking places near Kozhikode airport at Chemmad, Chettipidi, Tanur… roads are being blocked. In fact there are not protests, but abuse. In the name of protest against the rape the vehicle of many passengers are being blocked and they are being abused,” she said.

Animal activist Sally Kannan on her FB page said:

“I don't understand the logic of angry mobs burning tyres in the middle of the road and attacking vehicles in Malappuram to protest against the baby girl raped and murdered in Kashmir. How can hurting the public here do any help to the poor child? An old man almost fell off the steps of a bus as the passengers were forcefully made to get down, crowds stopping vehicles and using extremely abusive language. Is this how people plan on getting justice for a murdered child? Tear gas being used in Tirur railway station on the mob now... Most of the protesters will be getting paid by their political parties and wouldn't even care if this little girl or any other was raped or not and would be just joining in for the thrill of destroying public property and being morons. Human beings are strange indeed and I feel happy that I spend most of my time with animals than humans!!!”
