KOZHIKODE: A 15-year-old student from the city drowned near the Pathankayam side of the Iruvazhinji river on Friday. The dead has been identified as Siddique Ayoob, a native of Palazhi.

The teenager was on a pleasure trip along with his three friends to the eco-tourism destination. He drowned while taking bath in the river. It took around one-and-a-half hour to recover the body.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel and the police conducted the search in the river.

Local residents said the number of tourists who violate safety instructions and move to the deeper side of the river was on the rise in the region. Trekking through restricted paths too was continuing to be a threat, they said.

Noticing the frequent accidents, the Disaster Management Authority had even conducted a mock drill in the area to audit the preparedness to deal with incidents of drowning and flash floods.
