KOCHI: Akhila, wife of Sreejith who was murdered in custody by the police, has been given the appointment to the post of Class III clerk in south Paravoor taluk office. District collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla handed over the appointment letter to Akhila at her residence on Thursday morning.

The collector has informed her that she can join the job within the next 15 days. He also handed over a cheques worth Rs. 10 lakh which the government has provided as compensation. Cheques worth Rs. 3.33 lakhs were made on the name of Akhila and Sreejith’s mother Shyamala, and a third cheque for Rs. 3.34 lakhs was made on the name of Sreejith’s daughter Arya Nanda.

Shyamal, who broke down saying that the loss of her son could not be compensated, also expressed her happiness in the government not abandoning them. Akhila too received the appointment letter with tears in her eyes. Akhila wished to get a job somewhere nearby so that she could take care of her daughter. Now, her wish has been satisfied.

The government not offering any compensation even though it was proven beyond doubt that Sreejith was tortured to death had created controversy in the beginning. Nevertheless, the cabinet offered a job for Akhila and compensation the day after CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan visited Sreejith’s house.
