Praveena has done more than a dozen of good roles in Malayalam films. This has given her a special place in the heart of Malayalis.

Now, she says in her cinema career, she is most indebted to megastar Mammootty.

“Even in the beginning of my career, I have done some good films. I was selective, waiting for good films. If the film we select first is a good one, the films that follow in our career will also as much good. But if our first choice is bad what follow will be bad films. Mammootty sir had told me this…,” she says.

Praveena recounts an incident in her life when she was receiving many offers during the sets of Ezhupunna Tharakan. She was doing the role of Mammootty’s sister. “My father, mother and I were staying in a hotel room in Ernakulam at that time for shooting. Just then a phone call came, asking for me. Some director at the other end wanted to speak to me to tell some story related to his future project. I was just 18 years and my father used to speak on behalf of  me. Though my father asked him to tell the story, he kept on persisting. My father got angry and said we don’t want your film. He also told the director that he didn’t like the way the latter talked.

The next day I was in disdain when I went to the shooting location as I had never ever lost my cool with anyone in the cinema field. It was then Mammootty sir arrived at the sets. He inquired about my embarrassment. After patiently listening to me he took the director’s number from me and called him up. He enquired about the call the director had made to me and slammed down the phone after saying that I shall not act in low grade films like the one he makes. I’m a good girl coming from a good family,” she recalled.

Praveena says that she was sitting near Mammootty and was shocked at the turn of events. When I asked why he called the director, he gave me this valuable piece of advice.

“You are a small child. You have just come into the film industry. You will get numerous calls like this, many will call you for films. Don’t go and fall into those traps. If you select a film by choosing a good story and good director, you will have a great future… you can remain for long in the film industry. He also told the same thing to my father and mother.”

Praveena adds that Mammooty’s advice still rings in her ears. “Only because I heeded his advice, I continued to get good films.”
