KASARAGOD:  The major political parties here have appealed to the government to set up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences-like institution, which the Centre may sanction in the next phase, in Kasaragod. Leaders of the CPI (M), Congress, and the BJP have come out in support of the demand.

CPI (M) district secretary M V Balakrishnan said the LDF government should take steps to see that the proposed medical college was set up in Kasaragod and that the district unit of the party would extend support to the demand as the district did not have an institution to provide expert medical care.

District Congress Committee president Hakkeem Kunnil said the Congress was prepared to join hands with the other political formations to project a united voice to realise the demand. He said the people here had to rely on hospitals in Mangaluru and elsewhere in the State even 34 years after the district came into being.

Similar sentiments were expressed by former KPCC executive member M C Jose, who said the BJP-led government at the Centre should take steps to set up the facility in the district in view of the numerous endosulfan victims here.

BJP district president K Sreekanth called upon the government to take swift steps to set up the facility in the district as Kasaragod did not have any institute equipped to provide special medical care, especially to endosulfan victims.

The district had enough land for the facility, Sreekanth said. 0Meanwhile, the DYFI, while hosting a meeting at Mogral-Puthur near here recently, raised a similar demand.
