KOCHI: The investigation wing of Income Tax quizzed Cardinal George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, in connection with the controversial property transactions conducted by the Church.

The Cardinal was called to the IT (investigation) office and his statement was recorded in a session lasting a few hours, according to sources.

The sleuths had in June this year searched some 21 premises of a Kakkanad-based business group on the suspicion of large-scale tax evasion.

The agency had conducted a preliminary inquiry in which it had allegedly unearthed unaccounted income possessed by the firm.

“The group has been on an expansion spree for some time and it has clearly played the role of a land aggregator in a slew of property transactions done by the Church,” pointed out a source.

Cardinal Alencherry had faced flak from a section of the Church and the senior echelons had to intervene to broker peace between the warring factions.

The land row also resulted in the Pope appointing Palakkad Bishop Jacob Manathodath as apostolic administrator of the Syro-Malabar Church, divesting Cardinal Alencherry of his administrative powers.
