THODUPUZHA: Following unexpected heavy rains and increasing inflow in the catchment area of Cheruthoni dam, all its shutters were opened on Friday.

The shutters were opened after evacuating people on the banks of Periyar river. The attempt is to release 6 lakh litre water per second. Earlier, it was just 1.20 lakh litre.

Meanwhile, since the water level is under control at Edamalayar dam, move is also on to close its shutters, Power minister M M Mani has informed.

As per the reading on Friday noon, the level of water in Idukki dam is 2401.60 feet. Though the shutters were opened, the level of water has not decreased.

However, the water level in Edamalayar dam is under control. Now there is move to release more water from Idukki. Residents in Periyar border have been issued alerts.

The power minister, however, sought to allay fears of the people in flood-ravaged areas.

Cheruthoni under water

Meanwhile, after the Cheruthoni shutters were opened, Cheruthoni town almost got submerged by water. Cheruthoni bus stand has also been nearly washed off. The traffic in this area got disrupted after Cheruthoni-Kattapana Bridge was inundated.

Army reaches Aluva

Considering the possibility of floods, the government announced holiday for government offices on Friday afternoon.
Army men have been deployed in Aluva as a precautionary measure. 32 member team of Army engineering department is toiling with police to rescue stranded people. Four more companies of Disaster Management personnel will reach Aluva, it is informed.
