Applications have been invited from unmarried boys to join the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala in Kerala, under the 10 + 2 cadet entry (B.Tech.) scheme. The date of birth of the applicant should be between July 2, 1992 and January 1, 1995. Students who have passed their senior secondary (Plus Two) or equivalent examination with at least 70 per cent aggregate marks in physics, chemistry, and mathematics, are eligible to apply. The student should also have scored at least 50 per cent marks in English in Class X or XII.

Applicants should also meet the following physical standards:

Minimum height: 157 cm with correlated weight (as per age)

Eye sight: 6/6, 6/9 correctable to 6/6

Students can download the application format from the web site www.nausena-bharathi.nic.in. The duly filled-in application along with attested copies of relevant certificates should be sent by registered post to Post Bag No. 4, Nariman Bhavan, New Delhi – 110011 so as to reach the addressee on or before June 28.

Applications will be screened on the basis of the marks obtained in physics, chemistry, and mathematics in Plus Two/ equivalent examination, and called for Service Selection Board (SSB) interview. The five-day long interview will be held at Bangalore, Coimbatore, or Bhopal from July to November.

The interview consists of two stages. Stage I includes intelligence test, picture perception and discussion. Those who fail to qualify stage I will be sent back the same day.

The stage II test includes psychological tests, group task tests, group discussion, and interview.

Successful candidates will have to undergo medical examination. The training is scheduled to commence in January 2012.

The selected candidates will be inducted as cadets to four-year B.Tech. course in electronics and communication engineering or mechanical engineering at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala.

During the course, cadets will be allotted executive or technical branch. On successful completion of the course, B.Tech. degree will be awarded by the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The cost of training including books and reading materials will be met by the Indian Navy.

The cadets will also be provided free clothing and mess facilities. On successful completion of training, the cadet will be commissioned as Sub Lieutenant in the pay scale of Rs.15,600-Rs.39,100.

BS-MS course at IISERs

The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) at Thiruvananthapuram, Pune, Bhopal, Mohali, and Kolkata have invited applications for admission to their five year BS-MS dual degree programmes for 2011-12.

BS-MS courses offered in physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics are interdisciplinary in nature.

The institutes have residential campuses with state-of-the-art research and teaching laboratories, modern hostels, and recreational facilities. It is a suitable programme for meritorious Plus Two students in science subjects with aptitude in research.

In the integrated course, the first two years will have core courses in basic sciences. The third and fourth year will be dedicated to specialising the chosen science subject. The fifth year will focus on the research project.

The students are trained to join research and development institutions, academia and science based industries such as pharmaceuticals , biotechnology, electronics, materials and polymer industries.

Students who have obtained at least 60 per cent marks in Class XII/ Plus Two/ equivalent examinations in science subjects and have secured a rank in IIT JEE 2011 or those who have qualified in Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) or students who have passed Class XII in 2010 / 2011 in science stream with high marks or grade are eligible to apply.

Detailed eligibility criteria can be obtained from the web site www.iiser-admissions.in. Applications are to be submitted online as per guidelines given on the web site. The application fee is Rs.500 (Rs.250 for SC/ ST applicants).

Students who have qualified KVPY or IIT-JEE can submit applications online up to June 23. Those who have passed class XII / 10 + 2 examination from State / Central Board can apply from June 15 to July 8. They will have to undergo an aptitude test on July 16.
