       M.Tech in Translational Engineering

Government Engineering College, Barton Hill, Thiruvananthapuram, will offer a four-semester M.Tech programme in Translational Engineering, a mode of study that promotes the ‘lab to the field’ concept.

The course is being offered in collaboration with Columbia University, New York, the US; the University of Montreal, Canada; and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras.

The ‘lab to the field’ approach ‘plays an important role in reviving a deteriorated city or upgrading an existing urban infrastructure, which is much more difficult, complex and challenging compared to designing and creating a new city,’ according to information made available from the college.

It calls for the involvement of the best scientists, engineers, analysts, planners, architects, politicians, and economists.


Two-year programme

The two-year M.Tech in Translational Engineering, to be launched in July 2015, is designed to nurture a cadre of well-trained inter-disciplinary investigators and research teams for devising innovative research tools and technologies.

“This programme is expected to serve as a magnet that concentrates basic, translational, and engineering investigators, community builders, networking professionals and societies, and industry to facilitate the development of new professional interactions, programmes, and research projects,” the concept note of the programme read.

The programme would teach students to identify their topics of research in their own discipline. The results of the research/analysis are expected to be highly valuable information that can be used by decision-makers, politicians, and funding agencies to make the best practical decisions.

“The course content is multidisciplinary, one that combines scientific concepts, engineering processes, and industrial concerns — resulting in socially responsible researchers and professionals who are uniquely positioned to enter the workforce, and take any kind of research/problems, and translate them into a practical reality,” the concept note said.

Programme structure

The proposed M.Tech programme follows the choice-based credit system with a minimum of 69 credits for the award of the degree.

After two semesters, the students will have a chance to undergo a six-week internship at the University of Montreal, Columbia University or IIT Madras.

The selection to these institutes will be based on the assessment of the students after the first two semesters.

The programme would involve a series of lectures, seminars, practical sessions, and independent project/research.

In order to motivate the beneficiaries to take up socially relevant works, a main subject identified for this course is ‘Responsible Engineering.’

The new subjects ‘Responsible Engineering’ and ‘Translational Engineering’ designed by faculty from the University of Montreal and Columbia University will be taught in conjunction with the faculty of Kerala.

Engineers from any discipline can apply for this programme, which is set to start with 18 seats initially.

This programme will be run in the self-financing mode under the auspices of Centre for Continuing Education, Government of Kerala, GEC Barton Hill chapter.
