THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Government is going to stop various benevolent funds for free treatment of poor sections of society. Nine benevolent funds such as Karunya and Sukrutham will be discontinued.

The government’s official explanation is that it will start new insurance schemes. Through the benevolent fund, the government has incurred a debt of Rs 900 crore via arrears. There is an arrear of Rs 854.65 crore in Karunya scheme and Rs 8 crore in Sukrutham scheme. The government also doesn’t have any clear explanation on how it will pay off the above debts.
Meanwhile, former finance minister K M Mani remarked that stopping the benevolent fund is tantamount to killing a child in front of our eyes.

People used to get financial help for diseases like cancer, heart ailments, brain/ liver surgeries, kidney diseases (dialysis), further treatments, peritoneal dialysis, haemophilia (Rs three lakh for each patient) and ailments related to back bone, vein and lungs.
