KOCHI: The Kochi police have arrested a 32-year-old migrant worker on charge of sexually abusing his 11-year-old niece. The arrested man was identified as Sheyasi Sheikh, 32, a native of Uttar Pradesh. According to the police, the family consisting of father, mother and the victim had settled at a rented building in Edappally five years ago.

The victim’s father was working in a local workshop and he later brought four of his relatives to the same house. The victim’s uncle used to take her to the terrace of the single-storey building on one pretext or another and subject her to sexual assault.

Her ordeal was finally revealed when a neighbour witnessed the incident and the residents’ association informed Childline authorities two weeks ago, the police said. A medical examination at the General Hospital proved that she had been sexually assaulted. A magistrate recorded her statement and the accused was arrested. Meanwhile, the incident evoked strong protest from local residents and the family was forced to move out to another place in Kochi.
