KOCHI: District Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla has asked the District Medical Officer to conduct an inquiry into allegations that a pregnant woman, who was taken to two hospitals here with burn injuries, was denied treatment. Safirulla had intervened in the issue on Tuesday evening before she was admitted to the Ernakulam Medical Centre. Hospital authorities said that she had suffered about 51 per cent burns.

Her condition remained serious, they said. The Collector said that the DMO would also inquire whether the woman was receiving proper treatment at the hospital. Thilothama, 20, wife of Odisha native Ankita Nayik, was referred to the ESI hospital at Pathalam from the Kottayam Medical College, where she had been admitted on Saturday after she was injured in a house fire. The patient was referred to Kochi as the Kottayam Medical College lacked an isolation ward.

Officials of a private company in which the patient’s husband was working alleged that the ESI hospital authorities refused to admit her stating that they were not authorised to accept the case. She was later taken to Lourdes Hospital. Persons who had accompanied the woman alleged that the authorities there refused to admit her saying that an isolation facility was not available at that time.

However, authorities at the Lourdes Hospital denied the allegations stating that she was given necessary treatment. The patient could not be admitted in view of the non-availability of an isolation ward and was referred to Ernakulam Medical Centre, Lourdes Hospital authorities said.
