KOCHI: Customs Air Intelligence officials at the Cohin International Airport at Nedumbassery have foiled yet another attempt to smuggle in gold and seized the metal worth Rs. 26 lakh from an international passenger.

The accused, identified as 28-year-old Shebina, a native of New Mahi, landed here from Sharjah on Friday and was found carrying 49 gold pieces weighing 931.150 g.

The gold, in the form of ‘E’- and ‘I’- shaped plates, was found concealed inside the transformers of a water heater and a toy car inside her checked-in baggage. A follow-up investigation is on to trace other members of the racket.

Meanwhile, official sources pointed to a possible revival in the flow of black-market bullion from abroad with smugglers coming back in the market post-demonetisation, eyeing a rising profit margin.

In their opinion, hawala networks had once again become active with new currency notes, which are now supporting the cash-based gold smuggling business.
