ALAPPUZHA: A 17-year-old boy drowned and his elder brother who tried to save him went missing in Vembanad Lake at Nerekadavu, near Vaikom, on Saturday morning. The police said Harikirshnan, 17, and his two relatives went out for swimming at Nerakadavu, where a rivulet joins Vembanad Lake.His relative Adityan got caught in currents from the rivulet and started drifting. Harikrishnan who tried to save his relative too was caught in the currents.

Soon, local people rushed in and saved Adityan.

Meanwhile, Harikrishnan continued to drift and his elder brother Unnikrishnan, 24, jumped into the waters to save him. However, they were both carried away in the strong currents. Harikrishnan’s body was found some time later nearly half a kilometre into the lake by the local people. Unnikirshnan is still missing. The siblings belong to Thuruthel Veedu, Nerekadavu.
