KOCHI: The Nedumbassery police have arrested a 34-year-old West Bengal native on charge of murdering an Odisha native. The arrested man was identified as Benu Das, a native of Murshidabad. Benu Das allegedly murdered Ashok Patra, a contract employee with the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) Golf Course.

The accused had been working under Ashok, who had taken up the contract for cleaning works with the CIAL Golf Course on contract basis.

According to the police, Benu Das had an altercation with Ashok on Sunday night over non-payment of salary over the past couple of months.

The altercation soon escalated into a fist fight between the two.

In a fit of rage, Benu Das allegedly smashed Patra’s head using a metal rod. In the impact of the hit, Ashok died on the spot. A police team, which rushed to the spot, took Benu Das into custody.

The accused was produced in a local court and was remanded in custody. Ashok’s body will be handed over to his relatives after an autopsy.
