KOCHI: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) sleuths on Tuesday nabbed a police officer while he was accepting bribe. The officer, identified as C C Ajith Kumar, was attached to the traffic wing of Palluruthy police station as assistant sub inspector. The sleuths caught him accepting Rs 3,000 from a bus conductor for framing a mahassar to avail medical insurance.

Besides demanding a bribe to complete the procedures at the police station, the accused had also asked the person to appoint a lawyer of his preference. Acting on a complaint, the sleuths laid a trap by handing over chemically treated currencies to the complainant and caught the accused red-handed.

The accused has been booked under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and will be produced before the Muvattupuzha vigilance court on Wednesday. The VACB will soon submit a report to the City Police Commissioner, recommending disciplinary action against the official.

In a separate drive, the Vigilance sleuths nabbed a Special Village Officer at Njarakkal, identified as Shibu, for accepting bribe. According to VACB officials, the Special Village Officer while serving as Village Assistant at Pallipuram village office had demanded Rs. 8,000 from a person for completing transfer of registry of the land.

Based on the complaint, the sleuths laid a trap and nabbed the accused red-handed while accepting bribe from Mampilly Junction at Njarakkal. According to officials, Shibu had allegedly demanded and accepted bribe worth Rs 10,000 from the relative of the complainant in the case. The accused will be produced before Muvattupuzha vigilance court on Wednesday.
