KALPETTA: A group of students and outsiders, suspected to be Students Federation of India (SFI) workers and their sympathizers, went on a rampage at Donbosco College at Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad.

The mob broke windowpanes of classrooms and destroyed CCTV cameras, computers, printers, photocopiers, and furniture on the campus.

A statue inside the college chapel was also destroyed. College authorities estimated the damage at Rs 20 lakh.

The violence started around 11.30 am after a group numbering 200 hurled stones at the windowpanes, the college authorities said, adding that a group of policemen there did not intervene to defuse the situation.

Earlier, the protesters informed the college Principal that they would take out a march to the college in protest against the suspension of a second-year degree student who was allegedly involved in activities of a student union on the campus.

The Principal declared holiday for the college on the day, the authorities said. The police registered a case in connection with the incident.
