THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An auto rickshaw driver attempted to abduct an engineering student in broad daylight. The girl, who jumped out of the rickshaw, has suffered bruises to her face and legs, and she has been admitted to a private hospital in Chakka, and the hospital officials have said that her wounds are not critical.

The rickshaw driver Kumaran (43), who is a native of Pallichal, has been arrested by the Pettah police.

The girl, who is a fifth semester engineering student, caught Kumaran’s rickshaw from Kannammoola after her dance class to come back to her home in Pallimukku near Pettah by about 8.30 am on Saturday.

Police says Kumaran talked indecently to her from the moment she got in the rickshaw. He kept asking her to join him for a tea and eating out from a nearby restaurant. Though she initially answered his questions she became silent when he started crossing the line.

He continued riding toward Pettah, even after reaching Pallimukku. The girl got scared and she immediately informed the police control room through her mobile. Also, the homeguard on duty, noticed the rickshaw that got stuck in the traffic block on the over-bridge over the railway track at Pettah. He also heard the shrieks of the girl. He immediately informed the Pettah police station.

The girl jumped off the slow moving rickshaw when it was climbing the Pettah-Anayara over-bridge.

The bikers who were just behind them and who heard the cries of the girl chased down the rickshaw and handed over Kumaran to the police.

Meanwhile, Kumaran’s relatives have reached the Pettah police station saying that he is mentally unstable.
