THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bio-informatics department head Dr Achuth Shankar is likely to become the new pro vice-chancellor (PVC) of Kerala University. He was recommended by Vice-chancellor Dr, P K Radhalrishnan in the syndicate meeting held today.

Though two Congress members including Jyothikumar Chamakkal backed his name, the Left members strongly opposed it. VC’s recommendation was also opposed by higher education additional secretary who appeared as the government’s representative.

According to new UGC rules, full-time professor in Kerala University can be recommended to PVC post. The Executive council should recognise this and respective syndicates should make the appointments. If the syndicate doesn’t recognise the recommendation, it should be handed over to the governor. The governor using his right as a Chancellor can make appointment on his own.

Vice-chancellor Dr P K Radhakrishnan recommended Achuth Shankar as PVC using his rights guaranteed by UGC rules. Though the Syndicate rejected the proposal, VC is likely to send the recommendation to appoint Acuth Shankar to the Governor.
