KOTTAYAM: Soon after the state government mentioned that the construction work of Athirappilly hydroelectric project has started, differences of opinion are seen in the congress party over it. Former chief minister Oommen Chandy pooh-poohed opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala’s opinion backing the project.

Chandy said a public discussion is needed before implementing the project. There are differences of opinion in the government itself over the project. The project should be executed after evolving a consensus among political parties. A discussion is needed on it. My stand is that the project should be implemented after a consensus. We need development protecting environment and there is no dispute in that, he said.

Chennithala had sent a letter to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan requesting not to approach the center for environmental clearance as its term has expired.   This project will cause heavy damage to nature and environment, leading to the destruction of the Athirappilly waterfall, he opined.
