IDUKKI: Electricity Minister M M Mani has said that he agrees with former chief minister Oommen Chandy’s stance that the Athirapally project needs to be discussed in a general meeting and reach a consensus before it is implemented.

“I agree with Oommen Chandy’s stance on the issue. The project is beneficial for Kerala’s future,” he said.

He added: “The government has not left the Athirapally project. The government also wishes that an agreement is reached through discussions before it is implemented. Hydroelectric projects are essential. It is not good if the project gets mired in controversies.”

He also said that it’s only when hydroelectric projects are implemented that environmentalists come forward with environmental issues.
