THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: DYFI men on Sunday night assaulted police men who went to prevent them from removing RSS flags tied to a tree in connection with the Raksha Bhandan festival. AR Camp police man Arunnath (32), who was attacked, has been admitted to General hospital.  

The incident happened at Mudavanmugal hjunction at around 8:30 pm.

CPM had organised martyrs' day at Tamalam on Sunday evening. Leaders including V Sivankutty had taken part in the function. At the same tome, there was also raksha bandan festival of RSS at Mudavanmugal.

Considering volatility of the situation, five policemen under poojappura police station Grade SI Babu was deputed here.
While returning from their function, about 100 DYFI-CPM workers reached Mudavanmugal junction. Two among them climbed up the bunyan tree to remove RSS flag tied to it. Arun Nath was kicked when he tried to prevent this.Babu said partymen was led by ward councillor Gopan.
Later the situation was brought under  control after more policemen under principal SI from Poojappura station reached the spot.
