KOCHI: Pronouncing its judgment in one more case in connection with the Varappuzha sexual abuse case, the District Additional Sessions Court in Ernakulam sentenced Gautam Ashok Sangvi, a native of Rajasthan, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.

Judge K Kamanees also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Sanghvi, the eighth accused in the case. If he fails to pay the fine, he will have to serve an additional jail term of six months.

Meanwhile, the court acquitted seven accused persons in the case, including Pushpavathy of Kasaragod, Vinod Kumar of Cherupuzha in Kannur, Joshi Joseph of Kozhikode, Muhammad Basheer of Kasaragod, Sakkariya and Shiji of Thumpaman in Pathanamthitta.

The case pertains to the abuse of a minor girl from Kasaragod. As per the case, the first two accused had sold the girl to the eighth accused for Rs 15,000, who then abused the victim on April 20, 2011.

Meanwhile, the court has found Abdul Salam, a 63-year-old from Eranad in Malappuram, guilty in another case in connection with the case.

Last week, the court had sentenced Shobha John and Jayarajan Nair to 18 and 11 years of rigorous imprisonment in the first of the 32 cases registered in connection with the incident.

As per the case, which came to light in 2011, the victim was taken to several places in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and was sexually abused by several persons. It was Shobha John who allegedly handed over the victim to clients.
