NEW DELHI: Catholic priest Father Tom Uzhunnalil, who was kidnapped in Yemen March last year, has been released, External Affairs Minister Sushman Swaraj announced on Tuesday.

"I am happy to inform that Father Tom Uzhunnalil has been rescued," Ms. Swaraj tweeted with a photograph of the priest

Fr. Tom was kidnapped from an old-age home run by the Missionaries of Charity on March 4, 2016, was in the custody of IS terrorists but his whereabouts were not known. The priest had made an emotional appeal for his release in a video sent by his captors in the last week of December.

The Ministry of External Affairs worked with the Saudi Arabia and Yemen governments to get Father Tom released.

The Kerala Assembly, in May, passed a resolution in order to step up pressure on the Centre to ensure the release of the abducted priest.
