KOCHI: Talking at ‘Meet the Press’ held at the Ernakulam Press Club, Union Minister Alphons Kannanthanam said that there would have been no controversies if people had taken his beef comment as just a joke.

“You’ll get good beef in foreign countries, and I was only being funny when I asked why should they come here and eat the inferior quality meat of deprived cattle. But the media contorted what I said and made a controversy out of it. That there are no people in Kerala who can enjoy a good humour is the problem here,” he said.

Kannanthanam reiterated that it’s the choice of the people belonging to particular region as to what they should eat, and added: “Don’t think politicians can’t enjoy or tell a good joke. I’m basically a fun person.”

He further said that people are aware of the good things that Prime Minister Modi does. “The fact that the vote share of BJP is improving in Kerala is an indicator towards the fact that BJP is gaining grounds here,” he said.

He also said that the major challenge for tourism here is that Kerala lacks in basic facilities, and added that priority must be given to setup basic things like toilets.
