KOCHI: Talking to reporters in Aluva, Devaswom minister Kadakampally Surendran has said that he heartily welcomes the Supreme Court’s ruling referring a five-member Constitution Bench to consider the petition relating to entry of women in Sabarimala.

“The government’s stance is that there should be no gender discrimination with regards to entry in temples, and wold strongly stand with that opinion. We are ready to provide all documents and information, which are necessary for the case, if the court demands,” he said.

The Supreme Court bench presided over by the Chief Justice, earlier on Friday, ordered a five-member Constitution Bench to consider the petition relating to entry of women in Sabarimala.

The bench comprised of Dipak Misra, R Banumathi, and Ashok Bhushan had earlier requested to submit the things that need to be presented at the Constitution Bench.

The LDF government in 2007 had submitted an affidavit at the SC supporting the entry of women in Sabarimala, but the UDF government that followed said that there was no need to bring any changes to what’s already being followed.

The Indian Young Lawyers’ Association had approached the SC in 2006 demanding the entry of women of all ages in Sabarimala. The case was taken for consideration in 2016 after sending notices seeking clarification on the petition, following which, the SC heard detailed arguments on the case at different stages.
