Earlier there were reports that Mammootty would be appearing as Kunhali Marakkar, who was the chief of the Naval force of Kozhikode Samoothiri. Now, Malayali Super Star Mohanlal will also be seen in the historical role.

Mohanlal will appear as Kunhali in the Malayalam film Priyadarshan is going to direct after Oppam. “The research for the story is progressing and this will be completed within ten months. It is difficult and tiresome job to collect the history of very old times. Kunhali Marakkar was the name given to Naval chiefs appointed by Samoothris in sixth century in order to protect the land from Portuguese. But, there are four important Kunhali Marakkars in the history and the choice of character from them are yet to be made,” he said.

Priyadarshan’s next film is the Tamil remake of Maheshinte Prathikaram, directed by Dileesh Pothen. The film has been titled Nimir. The hero is Udaya Nidhi Stalin.
